Complexity, Forced And/or Self-organized Criticality, and Topological Phase Transitions in Space Plasmas

چکیده
The first definitive observation that provided convincing evidence indicating certain turbulent space plasma processes are in states of “complexity” was the discovery of the apparent power-law probability distribution of solar flare intensities. Recent statistical studies of complexity in space plasmas came from the AE index, UVI auroral imagery, and in-situ measurements related to the dynamics of the plasma sheet in the Earth’s magnetotail and the auroral zone. In this review, we describe a theory of dynamical “complexity” for space plasma systems far from equilibrium. We demonstrate that the sporadic and localized interactions of magnetic coherent structures are the origin of “complexity” in space plasmas. Such interactions generate the anomalous diffusion, transport, acceleration, and evolution of the macroscopic states of the overall dynamical systems. Several illustrative examples are considered. These include: the dynamical multiand cross-scale interactions of the macroand kinetic coherent structures in a sheared magnetic field geometry, the preferential acceleration of the bursty bulk flows in the plasma sheet, and the onset of “fluctuation induced nonlinear instabilities” that can lead to magnetic reconfigurations. The technique of dynamical renormalization group is introduced and applied to the study of two-dimensional nonresonant intermittent MHD fluctuations and an analogous modified forest-fire model exhibiting forced and/or self-organized criticality [FSOC] and other types of topological phase transitions.

Self-Organized Criticality
The causes and possible relations between the abundance of fractal structures and 1/f signals found in nature have puzzled scientists for years. Based on observations of computer simulations of the cellular automata sandpile model, the term, self-organized criticality (SOC) was invented by theoretical physicists Bak and coworkers (1987) and was used to explain a universal dynamic organizing pro...
متن کاملNonequilibrium Phase Transitions in Epidemics and Sandpiles
Nonequilibrium phase transitions between an active and an absorbing state are found in models of populations, epidemics, autocatalysis, and chemical reactions on a surface. While absorbingstate phase transitions fall generically in the DP universality class, this does not preclude other universality classes, associated with a symmetry or conservation law. An interesting issue concerns the dynam...
متن کاملSelf-organized criticality in nonconservative mean-field sandpiles
A mean-field sandpile model that exhibits self-organized criticality (SOC) despite violation of the grain-transfer conservation law during avalanches is proposed. The sandpile consists of N agents and possesses background activity with intensity η ∈ [0, 1]. Background activity is characterized by transitions between two stable agent states. Analysis employing theories of branching processes and...
متن کاملGranular Matter: a wonderful world of clusters in far-from-equilibrium systems
In this paper, we recall various features of non equilibrium granular systems. Clusters with specific properties are found depending on the packing density, going from loose (a granular gas) to sintered (though brittle) polycrystalline materials. The phase space available can be quite different. Unexpected features, with respect to standard or expected ones in classical fluids or solids, are ob...
متن کاملSelf-organized criticality and absorbing states: lessons from the Ising model.
We investigate a suggested path to self-organized criticality. Originally, this path was devised to "generate criticality" in systems displaying an absorbing-state phase transition, but nothing in its definition forbids the mechanism to be used in any other continuous phase transition. We used the Ising model as well as the Manna model to demonstrate how the finite-size scaling exponents depend...
